God is Indeed God
I’m reading through the Bible with my sons. It may take 20 years at our pace but I’m determined to get read it to them every night until we are done. The good ole OT is difficult at times and they lose interest fast. I do my best to keep them interested but…let’s just say we breezed through a fair amount in Leviticus and Numbers.
Some of my favorite moments are when I read a verse that jumps off the page and speaks to me so strongly I become hyper-focused, completely forget i’m reading to my kids, and they start using my body as a jungle gym. That happened last night. Deuteronomy 7:9.
God is indeed God.
My wife enjoys the Message which we are using to read through the Bible together (at a much different pace). As used that version as I read the chapter again this morning. From verse 7…
God wasn’t attracted to you and didn’t choose you because you were big and important—the fact is, there was almost nothing to you. He did it out of sheer love, keeping the promise he made to your ancestors. God stepped in and mightily bought you back out of that world of slavery, freed you from the iron grip of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know this: God, your God, is God indeed, a God you can depend upon. He keeps his covenant of loyal love with those who love him and observe his commandments for a thousand generations.
So many things in life will let you down. But God is the one thing you can always depend on. We sang this song in church yesterday by the Elms. The message, as I interpret it, is with all the mess we see in the world, shining a “certain light” can heal all wounds. The chorus…
Bring a chair up to the table.
Bring a message to the crowd.
Where’s a common trust to deliver us from the wretched and the proud?
Sing a tune about the promise.
Speak on that which we depend.
And if a certain light don’t shine again,
Baby, this is how the world will end.
That light is the Light of Christ. It is the love of God spoken of in Deuteronomy. It is the light described in 2 Corinthians. We must hold fast to the knowledge that God is indeed God and is “that which we depend.”
Are you depending on God? Are you helping shine that light?

Hey Will,
This is the first time I have seen your blog. It is really awesome. Are you still teaching at NCCS? You know God will judge us one day on how we raised our childen and I know He will say to you, “well done, my good and faithfu servant!”
God Bless, Hallie K. Roberts
