Well…probably against our better judgment, we did it. We put together the bootleg recordings of the worship music from Xtreme Summer 2011 and made them available. There is probably good reason why people don’t do this.

That being said, I want to give my two cents. Yes, it is difficult putting out something with your name on it that is less than perfect and yes, God deserves our absolute best and utmost excellence. But how great is it that we are able to send churches, youth groups, students, parents, new believers, etc. home with the exact music from the camp they just attended. They don’t have to wait several months for us to go back in the studio and rerecord everything until it sounds as polished as we would’ve liked. They don’t have to buy CDs (even though it helps me when they do) that have a bunch of music that wasn’t sung at the camp and that they don’t know and that they may never actually ever hear sung ever. And we don’t have to spend thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours pre-making a CD months before the week of camp full of songs we plan on doing. It might not be perfect (in fact I know it’s not), but I think it will be a blessing to many.

I equate it to the audio or DVD of the speakers at the camp recorded and copied on site and then available to those who want to take home the powerful message they just heard. We are doing the same thing with the music.

And I think i would do it again.

Before we got to camp this week we talked about recording ourselves playing. Why? Well, I wrote a new songs and I wanted to have record of it. The more we talked about it, the more we discussed the idea of putting together a CD at the end of the week with recordings of the music we’d be playing. I checked on the mechanical licenses needed and purchased them just in case. I got a couple spools of blank CDs and some CD labels, and I borrowed a CD copier.

We had everything we needed except the versatile multi-thousand dollar live recording rig needed to do a live recording right. Why? 1) ain’t no way this broke preacher can afford that and 2) ain’t no way were going to have time to use it properly. So what did we do…?

2 mic lines directly out of the house console into my Zoom H4n. Yep, the cheapest least editable option available.

Where does that leave us? Well…if we play poorly, there won’t be anything we can use. If it isn’t mixed even remotely well from the console it will be worthless. And if my little Zoom H4n craps out, we’ve got no plan B.

But I believe we will play well. And I am confident the man behind the board knows what he is doing (one of the best in the business in my opinion). And I’m pretty sure very little can go wrong with a box that only does one thing…record.

So i’ll let you know how it turns out…if it turns out at all. In the meantime, we might need to practice a little more.

And for all you music friends of mine, I can feel what you’re thinking and saying right now and I agree…but I’m doing it anyway. :)
