Lukewarm Worship Leader

Posted by:

Carlos Whittaker (guy who does something at Buckhead church) has got a great discussion going on over at his blog right now about what defines a worship leader who is not really living up to his title. He borrowed the theme from the pastor of Lifechurch.tv, but I prefer his angle.

One point in particular got my attention – should a worship leader be writing their own music instead of only relying on songs written by people outside of there church? I say, emphatically, YES!!! Why should the pastor be the only one devoting time and energy creating original messages for the people of his church?

What are your thoughts?

Just because you’re a good song writer doesn’t mean you should lead worship anymore than your race or sex qualifies you to be President. There are many song writers who couldn’t lead worship, but there are also plenty of people that could lead worship effectively and not write one word.
I think the best music leaders, though, are those that can effectively lead people into a place of worship, using mulitple styles of music. That person would use a mixture of music that was written specifically for that congregation AND music they have heard elsewhere. Why limit yourself or your congregation to one style or composer? True worship isn’t limited to rock or hymns, or Will Goodwin or Matt Redmond.

very true james. My argument is not that all song writers should lead worship or all worship leaders should write songs. However, if you are a talented song writer and your songs are genuinely from your heart, who better to lead the people into understanding what the song is all about than the person who wrote it. At the same time, I don’t see why pastors are expected to write a new message every week but worship leaders get off the hook by just finding songs that may or may not work with the message and never sing something that came personally from their heart.

Sure some singers and song writers are better than others but when it comes to worship, God wants the heart more than the expression. We should always strive to give God the most excellent as that is the LEAST He deserves. But when I catch my six year old son singing a song he just made up about how much he loves god and it is off pitch and has no form or catchy melody, it blesses me more than aobut any worship service I’ve ever been in because I know it is real.

i totally agree, Will! write. even if it aint “good”. write. even if no one hears what is written but God and the writer. write. it helps keep the communication skills a flowin’. it’s not good to keep all that stuff dammed up inside of you …

True, why should pastors have to write all their sermons, but worship leaders can just pick a song. It doesn’t seem very fair. But just as the pastor is researching his topic, the worship leader is researching what songs compliment the sermons. Maybe they are new songs written by the leader or songs written by someone else, but that song(s) needs to fit with the service, leading people to the throne room of God. I say it’s just a different type of preparation. The leader could just drop the hymnal on the table and whatever page it lands on, that’s the song for the day. I worked for a pastor that took all of his sermons from someone else. The music director worked harder at Sunday prep than the pastor did.
But I do like your story about your son. I wish we could all be as free as a six year old and sing our song to God. Who cares if it sounds good, it’s our heart song to our Father.
Anyway, I guess I just contradicted myself, but essentially, it’s all in the heart of the person leading or serving. If that person really wants to lead, if he’s a pastor, musician, greeter, coffee server, whatever, he or she should use everything at their disposal to lead others from where they are to where God wants them to be. I say we’ve succeeded when everyone can stand up like a six year old and sing their heart song to God.
    I’ll shut up now.

    Hey Will,

I’m living in Atlanta now. Would love to hang out sometime; I feel like I could learn a lot from you.
